CRS-SNV held a site visit to Gikuriro Program activities in Kayonza

The Chief of Party of Gikuriro Program at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), SNV representative and district officials have on February 15, 2017 held a site visit to assess the Progress of Gikuriro Program activities in Kayonza.

Kayonza district is one of the eight districts where Gikuriro program intervenes to fight against malnutrition among children under five years and women in reproductive ages and in Kayonza district, Gikuriro Program is implemented by Faith Victory Association (FVA).

The delegations of CRS, SNV, and district officials (In charge of JAF, and district EHO) was led FVA staff to visit Gikuriro Program activities in the community in Rwinkwavu and Nyamirama sector to observe the implementation of approaches used in nutrition and WASH activities.

In Rwinkwavu sector, the delegation has visited Mbarara (II) village where Gikuriro beneficiaries were gathered for VNS session, SILC activities. The delegation also toured Mbarara (II) village to observe the adoption of FFLS techniques in households.

In his speech, Alemayehu Gibremariam, Gikuriro Program’s Chief of Party-CRS has thanked all parties involved in smooth implementation of Gikuriro Program activities and encouraged them to keep working hard to improve the living conditions of children.

“I thank all who are involved in Gikuriro activities, I thank Community Health Workers, Farmer Promoters and Fields Agents but particularly mothers and fathers for their care to children, some of those children are doctors, leaders for that, collectively, we need to care of children and it a social responsibility we all are obliged to do.”

He reminded Gikuriro beneficiaries that the program has three more years called them to apply whatever techniques they learn from the program and make malnutrition a history in their respective villages.

The delegation also has visited training sites in Rwinkwavu Health Center and Nyamirama Health Center whereby village leaders and Community Health Workers (CHWs) were undergoing CBEHPP training.

SNV-Representative-Gatete Pascal who is in charge of WASH in Gikuriro Program interacted with participants to know tangible activities they plan after trainings.Trainees have promised to use community works to address the issue of latrines and construct Tip Taps in their respective villages.

Trainees from Rwinkwavu have promised to help their villages get moderate pit-latrines in three months from February while those from Nyamirama site have promised to construct latrines and Tip Taps for all their households of their villages by July 2017.

After sites visit, CRS-SNV delegation was received by The Mayor of Kayonza district for the debriefing. In the debriefing, they discussed about sites visit findings and on strengthening the partnership with the district.

SNV and CRS representatives thanked the district for the partnership in implementation of Gikuriro Program and promised the continued support in ending malnutrition in Kayonza.

Gikuriro Program is a USAID funded program aiming at improving nutrition status of women in reproductive ages and children under five years of age through integration of nutrition and WASH activities. Funds for Gikuriro Program are channeled through CRS and SNV and implementation of Gikuriro activities is executed by Local NGOs. In Kayonza district, Gikuriro activities are implemented by Faith Victory Association (FVA).
